Context

In just over a year, on May 2, 2017, Toronto will be opening a new museum devoted to the art of the XXIst century, named the Museum of Contemporary Art_Toronto_Canada.

The museum will develop an international program of exhibitions, events and publications. It will generate new exhibitions of international calibre and develop a global collection based on new and innovative ideas, with the year 2000 as a start date for the collection. It will co-produce exhibitions and new works with national and international partners such as curators, museums, major galleries, collectors and foundations, in Canada and internationally. In the city of Marshall McLuhan, the museum will base much of its work on developing a digital archive of relevance to contemporary art, artists, researchers as well as all visitors. It will also be connected to specialized and unique archives globally. Working with digital platforms in a pro-active and creative manner, the museum will develop a larger audience, both on-site and on the Web.

The Museum of Contemporary Art_Toronto_Canada is putting forth the “20/20 Plan”, which will come to full cycle in 2020. The result being moving into a complex of two buildings, made possible because of a unique alliance with Castlepoint Greybrook Sterling Inc. (partnership between Castlepoint Numa and Greybrook Realty Partners), which is leading the restoration of the heritage Auto BLDG. and the development of the surrounding 8-acre mixed use community known as the Lower JCT. (Lower Junction) in the south end of the Junction Triangle neighbourhood, housing the future Museum.

 

Position Summary

The Director of Programs and Research will play a critical role in supporting the CEO and Director and partnering with the senior leadership team in strategic decision making and operations as the Museum of Contemporary Art_Toronto_Canada continues to build its presence, enhance its quality programming and build capacity. This is a tremendous opportunity for a dynamic and visionary curator to maximize and strengthen the internal capacity of an emerging cultural institution, poised to expand its presence and global reach.

Reporting directly to the CEO and Director, the Director of Programs and Research will be responsible for the strategic development, execution, and oversight of the Museum’s programs and collection. The Director will develop and oversee the departmental budget. S/he will lead the curatorial team, responsible for display, learning, and archives and collection development, and will be setting and aligning cross-departmental goals and priorities. S/he will develop and oversee local, national, and international artistic partnerships and outreach that support the Museum’s objectives to create a compelling space through innovative, cross-disciplinary programming. S/he will oversee the Museum’s collection, which will be global in scope with the year 2000 as the starting date.

Major Responsibilities

Exhibitions/Programs/Research

  • Provide strategic oversight for the development of an annual exhibition program; oversee and manage exhibition and programming budget; oversee the negotiation of exhibition contracts and loan agreements; assign and steer projects; ensure programmatic learning and technological/online componants are fulfilled
  • Establish cross-discipline and cross-continental programs that support the Museum’s core objectives
  • Provide input to the Director of Administration for the development and preparation of grant proposals for exhibitions and programs; collaborate with Development department to ensure exhibition and programming fundraising targets are fulfilled
  • Research new artists and exhibition opportunities locally and internationally
  • Co-produce and commission new works
  • Steer learning events and activities interlocked with exhibitions, including research and archive development
  • Support and lead the production of the Museum’s journal, The Idea of North, as well as exhibition publications

Collections

  • Establish the Museum’s collecting mandate and long-range collecting strategies for growth and expansion
  • Develop the acquisitions budget and collaborate with the Director of Development to determine fundraising targets
  • Support any Board committees overseeing acquisitions and organize regular presentations of proposed acquisitions and gifts
  • Work with the CEO and Director and the Director of Development to cultivate and steward a local and international donor community

Staff Management

  • Hire, develop, motivate, coach and manage a highly performing team

Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree in art history required; Ph.D. preferred; or equivalent qualifications and experience
  • Fluency in English and French, or other second language preferable
  • Minimum of ten years of museum curatorial experience, with additional experience in senior management and oversight of departmental staff
  • Demonstrated record of exhibitions and publications
  • Extensive experience in the national and international art community and strong international network
  • Excellent working relationships with collectors, donors, artists, and art world peers
  • Experience with hiring, motivating and developing effective teams.
